Activities for Mentor Pairs

While mentor and student are free to develop their own plan based on their individual interests, there are several activities which past mentors and students have suggested:

Participate in College / University events:

  • College Wednesday luncheon lectures / events
  • Social and arts events
  • University events

Participate in Continuing education / professional events:

  • MSCLS Spring meeting
  • Company sponsored CE program
  • Awards ceremonies or other events / conferences

Schedule monthly meetings, perhaps over breakfast/lunch to:

Discuss careers

  • Mentors can provide feedback on students career plans while sharing personal experiences from their own careers.
  • Review student’s resume and introduction letters.

Discuss projects and developments at the mentor’s company and/or in the industry:

  • Set up a directed reading and discussion program for the student and follow-up at monthly meeting.

Discuss topics of interest such as:

  • Business plans
  • Reimbursements
  • Creative problem solving
  • Choosing a career path
  • Short term and long term goal setting.
  • Transitions
  • Balancing work and life

Visit mentor’s place of business / office:

  • Shadow the mentor during a workday.
  • Take a tour of the mentor’s company.
  • Attend a staff meeting or project meeting.
  • Meet colleagues within the company.
  • Participate in a mock interview

Share community involvement:

  • Discuss the importance of community involvement and how it fits into a busy work schedule.
  • Attend a community group event or volunteer together.
