Alumni History
As many of you are aware, the field of medical technology has undergone change over the years. In 1937, our first graduates graduated from the college of medicine, and later in the college of Liberal Arts. In 1974, the medical technology program merged with other allied health fields and pharmacy into the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. Dr. Mammen became the first Dean of this new college. As the field of medical technology expanded, in 1999 the Department of Medical Technology changed its name to the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, which now includes other lab related areas of Cytotechnology and Cytogenetics. The Medical Technology Alumni Association changed its name to the Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science Alumni Association to reflect this change.
We have experienced more changes with the opening of our new college in 2002. Our students now attend classes in a new 'state-of-the-art' building on the comer of John R. and Mack, and they will graduate from the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Presently, Lloyd Y. Young, PharmD serves as the dean. In 2004, our department is now that of Fundamental and Applied Sciences, which consists of CLS, OEHS and MS.
For the smaller alumni associations of this college to better serve the needs of their alumni, all of the groups have formed one association of affiliates to become the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Alumni Association. The MT/SLC Alumni Association now has a new name: the MT/CLS Alumni Affiliates. This allows us more access to help from the college and university when planning our functions. The same amount of money from your alumni dues still goes to MT/CLS AA, where it is primarily used for our students with award and scholarship programs.
You can keep up with the new directions of our field, and be a part of the new changes, by becoming a member of the MT/CLS alumni board. Please contact Jean Garza in the Clinical Laboratory Science Program at 313-577-5898, or e-mail Pat Byrne at pbvrne2@prodigy.net
