Lloyd Young, PharmD, has been appointed dean of the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Wayne State University effective August 17, 2009. The appointment was announced by Nancy S. Barrett, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

Young brings extensive experience in clinical research and training, development of interdisciplinary and online programs, and the professional development and placement of students. Young most recently served as professor and chairman for the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at University of California San Francisco (UCSF), while also holding the Thomas A. Oliver Endowed Distinguished Chair in Clinical Pharmacy.

The Dean’s Search Committee is pleased to announce two candidates coming for two-day campus visits.

Feb. 2 & 3 -- Dr. Wen Ling, chair and director of the PhD program in Physical Therapy, New York University.
Feb. 23 & 24 -- Dr. William McIntyre, director of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, AHEC-Southwest.

The Search Committee has completed preliminary interviews with five candidates.  At this time, the committee is scheduling full campus interviews (2 days) for two of these candidates.  Included in each two-day visit will be a candidate presentaiton, open forums with faculty, students, staff, members of the Board of Visitors, University President, Provost and others.  EACPHS faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in the open forums and to complete evaluation sheets on each candidate. Interim Dean
Howard J. Normile, PhD, associate dean of the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (EACPHS), Wayne State University (WSU), is serving as interim dean for the college beginning May 27, 2008.

After seven years as EACPHS dean, Beverly J. Schmoll, PT, PhD, FAPTA, leaves the WSU college to become dean of the College of Health Science and Human Service for The University of Toledo. She assumes her new responsibilities July 1.

Dr. Normile has been associated with the University for more than 30 years, beginning in 1974 as a graduate student in the Department of Physiology, WSU School of Medicine. Since 2002, he has served as EACPHS associate dean. Dr. Normile has served as chair and program director, Department of Physician Assistant Studies, and also held an appointment as associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry, WSU School of Medicine.

  • Kevin Desmond, student, EACPHS Mortuary Science program;
  • John McGinnity, associate professor, EACPHS Physician Assistant Studies program, Department of Health Care Sciences;
  • Carol Meier, academic services officer, EACPHS Office of Student and Alumni Affairs;
  • Denise Rhoney, assistant professor, EACPHS Department of Pharmacy Practice;
  • Richard Severson, associate chair, Department of Family Medicine, WSU School of Medicine; and
  • Robert Slattery, member of the EACPHS Board of Visitors.

Search Firm
Witt/Kieffer, a national executive search firm with 35 years of experience, has been selected to work with the Search Committee. The consultants will be on site June 24 and 25 for meetings with the Search Committee and groups in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The purpose of the visit is to clarify desirable candidate characteristics and for the search consultants to become more familiar with the college and its needs.
