General Program Requirements
General Program Requirements
Applicants to these graduate programs come from a diversity of backgrounds that include biology, chemistry, clinical laboratory science, education, engineering, medicine, medical sciences, nursing, pharmacy, physics, physician’s assistant studies, and radiation therapy technology. Since the majority of courses are offered in the evening, these graduate programs are especially suitable for individuals in full-time employment. Acceptance into these programs is contingent on admission to the Wayne State University Graduate School (see WSU Graduate Bulletin). Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science degree (or Bachelor of Arts degree if appropriate) from an accredited college or university. Applicants meeting all the necessary prerequisites (see below) are admitted into the programs with "Regular" status.
Students wishing to take up to 9 credit hours of graduate courses may do so by applying for "Non-Degree" status, as long as all pre-requisites have been satisfied.
English Proficiency: Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English prior to beginning the program, either by: a) completing baccalaureate degree requirements at a regionally accredited U.S. institution or at an institution where English is the medium of instruction; or b) achieving acceptable scores on either the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (see Appendix & Graduate Bulletin).
Admissions Process: The University Graduate Admission Office receives and collates applications and transcripts, and then forwards applicant files to the Graduate Officer of the College, who reviews the material for completeness and evaluates the application. Applicant files are then forwarded to the OEHS academic office for initial review by the admissions committee, followed in most cases by an interview either by telephone or in person. Applicants are then notified of their admission status by mail from the OEHS office, indicating whether or not a recommendation for admission was being forwarded to the College and University Graduate Offices. Those applicants not recommended for admission are notified in writing if they have deficiencies that would deny their current acceptance into the various OEHS programs.
