Dean's Column
After the rains of May, it’s nice to see the sun. The promise of better days
cuts through the future of our College as we adjust to a more limited fiscal environment. Despite this challenge, our College continues to hold strong its mission to enhance the health, education and well-being of the people we serve in the Detroit metropolitan area. We continue to be excited in having the opportunities to increase research investigations, to celebrate new alumni relationships, and to forge organizational partnerships to strengthen educational excellence in the health sciences.
We are looking at long-term solutions to adjust to a Michigan economy that is not expected to level off for several years. In light of this reality, we are evaluating new opportunities to realize efficient application of the talents and resources within this College. The University has offered a strong retirement package to faculty and staff. This means that the legacy of highly experienced educators, researchers and personnel now falls upon a younger workforce. It becomes their responsibility to continue to move this College forward in its mission to educate highly skilled health care practitioners and to increase through research the knowledge and models of treatment in the health sciences that span the globe.
I assure you that the College will continue its growth. Its present strength can be read in this Synergy E-newsletter. This publication reports on the dedication and quality of our faculty and students through numerous honors, publications, presentations, research grants, community service such as the student-supported Diabetes Education Wellness (DEW) clinic and participation in professional organizations.
I end this update with the sad announcement of the death of Jane Rogan. An alumna, former faculty and curator of the PharmMuseum, Jane died in April. She regularly visited the College to preserve the historical significance and rich history of Michigan's pharmacy program. She will be missed.
I extend my best wishes for an enjoyable and safe summer.
